Belgian 5th-Corner Transaction Data Reporting Confirmed

In a significant move towards digital fiscal transparency, the new Belgian coalition agreement confirms that the new government plans to introduce near-real-time transaction reporting by 2028, fundamentally transforming the country's electronic invoicing infrastructure. This innovative initiative will effectively create a so-called "fifth corner" on top of the Peppol invoicing model, which will become mandatory on January 1st, 2026.

The fifth corner of the Peppol model will specifically focus on instantaneous data transmission, allowing for quicker verification, more accurate auditing, and potentially more efficient tax collection mechanisms. Contrary to the most recent iteration of the proposed French system, it will still be possible to choose between invoicing via service providers or through the business's own invoicing solution.

Financial technology experts view this announcement as a potential blueprint for other European nations seeking to modernize their fiscal reporting systems. Integrating this new reporting mechanism within the established Peppol framework suggests a strategic approach that builds upon existing infrastructure while introducing novel technological capabilities. Analysts predict this move could significantly reduce administrative overhead, minimize reporting errors, and create a more transparent economic environment.

While specific technical details remain fully disclosed, the Belgian authorities indicate that the implementation will involve close collaboration with technological partners and will be rolled out on January 1st, 2028. The ministry has emphasized that the new system will prioritize data security, ensure strict privacy protections, and provide clear guidelines for businesses and financial institutions transitioning to this advanced reporting model. This forward-looking approach underscores Belgium's commitment to leveraging digital innovation in public financial management.
